German-Jordanian Energy Partnership

Cross-border cooperation for the transformation of energy systems

Our mission

The energy partnership is based on a declaration of intent on cooperation in the energy sector from 9 April 2019. It is being implemented on the German side by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Action in close coordination with other federal ministries and on the Jordanian side by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan (MEMR).

The aim of the partnership is to ensure a secure and sustainable energy supply, also in the light of international efforts to curb climate change. In addition, a sustainable energy system is to be developed and improved. This is to be made possible in particular through the increased expansion of renewable energies and the use of energy efficiency technologies as well as the involvement of the private sector.

Our approach

Cooperation is organised in three bilateral working groups (‘Energy efficiency’, ‘Electricity grid’ and ‘Digitalisation in the energy sector’) and two task forces (‘Innovation in the energy sector’ and ‘Gender equality in the energy sector’).

The thematic focus areas of the cooperation are:

  • National energy efficiency policy and its implementation
  • Operation of the electricity grid using a high proportion of renewable energies and interconnectors
  • Innovation and development of a startup ecosystem in the energy sector
  • Strengthening the participation and leadership role of women in the energy sector

The topics of cybersecurity in the electricity grid and green hydrogen are also gaining in importance.

Our milestones

  • June 2024: start of the work programme
