Digital Identities as an Anchor of Trust in the Energy System (DIVE)
DIVE examines how systems and devices in the energy system can be given secure digital identities. Decentralised identity management is tested and evaluated using application-oriented scenarios.
Goal: to enable a secure, fast and automated exchange of data in the energy system through digital identities
Topics: Digitisation, Innovation, Driving digitalisation and innovation
Runtime: since 2023
Our mission
The energy transition is leading to an increasing number of decentralised generation plants and new consumers that need to be integrated flexibly and efficiently. This creates an increasing need for coordination and data exchange between the players involved and the systems and devices themselves. This can only succeed if trust can be created in the underlying data and if there is knowledge of its origin. Digital identities offer a solution for this, as they guarantee the secure authentication of systems. However, the devices and systems involved must be equipped with digital identities. Cross-domain identity management is also necessary. Particular challenges are ensuring security and speed in the decentralised energy system and preserving the digital sovereignty of those involved.
Our approach
DIVE carries out both conceptual development activities and technical developments for establishing a decentralised identity management for the energy system. The technical infrastructure, including a blockchain-based register, will be set up initially. At the core of the pilot project infrastructure is an identity register, the scalability of which is being tested by linking it to various systems and use cases. To this end, real systems, including those of prosumer households, will be equipped with identities and registered.
This is done in dialogue with numerous stakeholders and is accompanied by a technical, economic, and regulatory classification. A target image and a transformation pathway show the importance of digital identities for energy systems in the energy sector and how they can be used more widely.
