Renewable energy sources in heavy goods transport

Renewable fuels and green electricity in heavy goods transport and the influence of regulatory instruments on their competitiveness

Copy short link

Various energy sources can be considered for existing fleets and future lorry and tractor unit registrations in order to significantly reduce the negative impact of heavy goods transport on the climate and environment. Green electricity, green hydrogen, bio-CNG/LNG and HVO100 have different potentials, ranges, emission reductions and costs. Various regulatory instruments are used at European and national level to incentivise their use. The influence of the lorry toll, energy tax and CO₂ price on drive energies is presented in the form of costs per 100 km.

The fact sheet shows that the potential of many renewable fuels is far from exhausted. The lorry toll (including the CO₂-based toll component) and the energy tax in particular have a major impact on fuel costs per 100 km. The rising CO₂ price reduces the profitability of fossil diesel, making alternatives more attractive.
