Global Alliance Powerfuels

International network for the regulation and market development of hydrogen and its derivatives

Our mission

The Global Alliance Powerfuels was initiated by dena together with well-known corporate partners. The strategic goal of the alliance was to promote the development of a global market for renewable hydrogen and its derivatives (so-called ‘power fuels’). The alliance focussed on three main goals:

  • Raising awareness that power fuels are a significant link in the effort to reach global climate targets
  • Supporting the further enhancement of regulatory frameworks with the focus on Europe as a central region of demand
  • Stimulating project development to globally enable production capacities on an industrial scale, thus increasing cost competitiveness with fossil fuels

E-mail list

In August 2024 we have closed the project Global Alliance Powerfuels. As dena we are continuing to work on hydrogen and powerfuels in a diverse project portfolio. If you want to stay up to date regarding dena insights and events on hydrogen and powerfuels, we hereby invite you to subscribe to our e-mail list.

Our approach

Cooperation with partners from industry was at the heart of the project. They were involved in defining the strategic agenda and key topics in the steering committee. They contributed their real-world experiences to the working groups. The project provided them with insights and strategic orientation with regard to the business areas currently being developed along the hydrogen value chain.

The alliance...

  • acted as a think tank, network and information platform,
  • identified challenges that jeopardise potential business models,
  • developed solutions and contributed them to politics, business and civil society via publications and events,
  • worked together with other initiatives that are committed to ambitious sustainability requirements for hydrogen,
  • promoted international cooperation,
  • accompanied legislative processes and
  • created an extensive knowledge base.

Our milestones

  • 2018–2024: more than 50 working group meetings were conducted with member companies focussing on EU regulatory developments.
  • 2018–2024: development of a network that was regularly informed about updates, with more than 2,000 subscribers
  • 2018–2024: organisation of more than 15 webinars (‘Powerfuels Briefs’) and other types of events (regional conferences and face-to-face workshops, for example) as well as numerous collaborations with renowned conferences focussing on hydrogen
  • 2019–2024: publication of background analyses and discussion papers; for example, on the topics of electricity procurement from electrolysers, carbon dioxide sources, water management, risk analysis/derisking
  • 2019–2024: publication of more than 20 position papers and statements
  • 2022 and 2023: development of and updates to a global database on public funding instruments (Public Funding Monitor) and publication of two reports to analyse and process the results
  • 2021 and 2022: two full-day virtual conferences were conducted, each on a focal topic of the hydrogen market ramp-up, with international partner organisations and several hundred participants
  • 2018–2020: publication of seven fact sheets on applications for hydrogen and hydrogen derivatives
  • 2020: publication of a modelling study on the role of power fuels in the global energy transition
