Biogas Register

National industry standard for biomethane volumes in Germany

Goal: to document on a single platform the biogas quantities and qualities in the natural gas grid from production to consumption

Topics: Renewable energies, Funding, Legal framework, Generating and distributing energy

Runtime: since 2010

Our mission

The Biogas Register is aimed at players who produce, trade or consume upgraded biogas that is fed into the natural gas grid. It enables the provision of documentation relating to certifications for the use of biomethane, in particular for:

  • electricity and heat production (Renewable Energy Sources Act – EEG),
  • the saving of energy and utilisation of renewable energies for heating and cooling in buildings (German Buildings Energy Act – GEG) and
  • the European Emissions Trading System (EU ETS).

dena developed the concept together with the Federal Ministry for the Environment (BMU), market participants, politicians and industry in 2009. Previously, there had been neither uniform standards nor a common approach to standardising documentation. dena operates the Biogas Register as a registrar, in the capacity of a neutral stakeholder.

Funktionsweise des Biogasregisters

Our approach

The Biogas Register makes it possible to verify the quantity and quality of biomethane in the natural gas grid from production to consumption. The information it records can be used by

intermediaries, end consumers and municipal utilities for marketing and the documentation required by law. The Biogas Register is regularly certified in accordance with the applicable quality assurance and safety requirements. Auditors ensure that the information is correct. As registrar, dena checks for plausibility.

Our milestones

The Biogas Register has been well received by the biomethane industry since it went online in February 2011. It has become much easier for companies and consumers to maintain the necessary documentation, fulfil legal obligations and receive compensation.

Further milestones are the following:

  • Eighty per cent of domestic biomethane quantities are certified with the help of the Biogas Register.
  • The Biogas Register has created a national industry standard.
  • The connection to the European Renewable Gas Registry (ERGaR) enables biomethane transfers between European registries (with the United Kingdom, Austria, Slovakia, Denmark and the Netherlands).
  • As of July 2024, around 340 companies are registered on the Biogas Register.
