Artificial intelligence in district heating
An implementation guide that supports district heating supply companies in the implementation of AI projects
Goal: to develop an implementation guide and recommendations for the use of artificial intelligence in district heating
Topics: Digitisation, Energy efficiency, Artificial intelligence, Heating transition, Driving digitalisation and innovation
Runtime: since 2021
Our mission
The core task is to evaluate the use of various AI use cases for the operation and optimisation of district heating networks in Germany. Innovative approaches and technologies should contribute to the decarbonisation of the heating sector and the achievement of climate targets. The focus is on developing recommendations for action in the form of an implementation guide to support district heating supply companies in the implementation of AI projects.
Our approach
Experts started by identifying ten use cases for the application of AI in district heating networks. These were assessed according to level of complexity and potential. dena implemented a prototype AI use case, together with the AI solution provider Rausch Technology GmbH: an AI-based heat load forecast at public utility Stadtwerke Norderstedt. The results of this use case were used to develop recommendations for action and an implementation guide for district heating supply companies.
Our milestones
- Survey on the degree of digitalisation in district heating supply companies
- Development of ten use cases for AI in district heating networks
- Real-world and realistic findings based on an AI-based heat load forecast
- Development of relevant recommendations for action
- Creation of an implementation guide
