‘Retail in Germany’ focal topics

Building on the current dena Building Report, the ‘Retail in Germany’ focal topic is dedicated to the special position of non-residential buildings and analyses the retail building landscape. Energy consumption (electricity and heat) and the corresponding greenhouse gas emissions are analysed in detail, in addition to the economic significance and structure. Energy consumption in the retail sector totalled around 27 TWh in 2022. This energy consumption caused around 11 million metric tons of greenhouse gases, corresponding to around 1.5 per cent of total greenhouse gas emissions in Germany. Both the development of emissions and consumption and the reasons for this are analysed in more detail in the focal topic.
