How will biomethane demand develop on the basis of the Buildings Energy Act?
Regulatory requirements and potential development of biomethane demand up to 2040

This analysis provides an estimate of the possible biomethane requirement to fulfil the Buildings Energy Act by 2040, as the installation of gas heating systems is still possible under certain conditions. However, these must gradually be fuelled with higher proportions of renewable energy sources such as biomethane or hydrogen. If sufficient quantities of hydrogen are not available for use in buildings by 2040 and gas heating systems are installed at the same time due to corresponding demand, the additional demand for biomethane will increase to 44.6 TWh by 2040 – up from 13.4 TWh.
