The use case for the energy domain in the establishment of the data institute
Efficient and secure data exchange in the energy sector: What are the stakeholders’ needs, what are the challenges and what best practices are there?
Goal: to provide support in creating the German government’s new data institute for data exchange in the energy sector
Topics: Digitisation, Renewable energies, Business models, Legal framework, Infrastructure, Innovation, Driving digitalisation and innovation
Runtime: since 2023
Our mission
Efficient and secure data exchange is crucial for a successful energy transition, as many processes in the decentralised energy system require a high degree of automation. This requires a solid data infrastructure, fair data governance and scalable data applications. For this reason, the German government is planning a new data institute as a central hub. It will be set up in three modules, including the use case for the energy domain. This use case will analyse technical, regulatory and economic challenges in two scenarios: access to consumption and generation data for the market integration of small renewable energy systems and proof of consumption for electric car charging processes. The results should ensure that the data institute’s services and expertise are aligned with the needs of stakeholders in the energy sector and that the exchange of data among the different players is promoted.
Our approach
The data exchange processes in both scenarios are tested in practice via a data space. Demonstration sites in the test field show how systems are connected via smart metering systems. In this manner, real-world hurdles and solutions for data exchange can be identified. Perspectives, experiences and best practices are gathered and discussed by stakeholders from the energy industry, politics and civil society via consultation formats such as surveys, Q&A sessions and industry meetings. The use case for the energy domain is accompanied by three working groups consisting of experts from the digital and energy sectors who advise and participate in the implementation of the module. The information collected will be published in order to utilise it for the further development of the data ecosystem in the energy sector and the establishment of the data institute.
