European Hydrogen Import Corridors

dena is assisting the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action in implementing the European Hydrogen Supply Corridors

Goal: to accompany the bilateral and multilateral processes for the timely realisation of trans-European hydrogen supply corridors for the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action and to support them with suitable instruments

Topics: Renewable energies, Overall system, Infrastructure, International partnership, Hydrogen, Generating and distributing energy

Runtime: 2023 to July 2025

Our mission

The availability of sufficient green hydrogen is a key success factor for the realisation of a secure, affordable and clean energy supply for Germany as an industrial hub. The integration of the planned German hydrogen core network into the European backbone network is therefore of central importance in Germany’s National Hydrogen Strategy. The European backbone network for hydrogen will make an important contribution to maximising the use of European renewable potential, to ensuring the integration and sovereignty of the internal energy market and to strengthening Europe’s industrial competitiveness.

This requires close cross-border coordination between project developers, regulatory agencies, governments, the European Commission and other stakeholders such as potential project financiers or research institutions. As the responsible ministry and central point of contact for domestic and foreign players from the hydrogen sector, dena supports the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action in proactively helping shape this European process.

Our approach

dena is assisting the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action in creating cross-border spaces for dialogue along the various supply corridors. It actively supports EU processes that are highly relevant to the implementation of a European hydrogen infrastructure and analyses specific strategic issues relating to the hydrogen infrastructure along the supply corridors. In this manner, it creates an evidence base for corresponding German positions. In addition, dena continuously maintains a robust data and knowledge base on the implementation status of the hydrogen supply corridors. It strengthens the operational capacity of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action through direct support. When necessary, it communicates to the outside world in a targeted and coordinated manner.

Planned milestones include the following:

  • Formats for dialogue in all supply corridors
  • Development of innovative financing instruments for cross-border hydrogen pipelines
  • Preparation of an overall study in the Baltic Sea region
  • Preparation of a feasibility study with the United Kingdom
