The Federal Network Agency’s stipulation on Section 14(a) of the German Energy Industry Act came into force on 1 January 2024. The ‘grid-oriented control’ enables distribution system operators to lower the power consumption of heat pumps, air conditioning systems, electricity storage systems and charging stations for electric cars in the event of grid overload. However, the systems can continue to be operated during this reduction, as a minimum supply is guaranteed. This fact sheet explains the background to the regulation, who is affected by it and what exactly is regulated.
