The focus is usually on the heating technology and the energy quality of the building envelope when it comes to the energy efficiency of buildings. Hot water heating also harbours potential for savings. Hot water heating accounts for the second highest proportion of final energy consumption in residential buildings after space heating. The use of energy-efficient showers or taps can save a considerable amount of hot water.

A study carried out by ITG Dresden has determined the exact effects and calculated the energy-saving potential for entire buildings.
