Branchenbarometer Biomethan (Biomethane Industry Barometer): between turbulence and future opportunities

The current dena industry report shows that the number of planning and new construction activities is increasing despite distortions in the biomethane market. The heating and fuel markets offer great potential.

Berlin, Germany, 24 October 2024. The German biomethane market is going through a phase of transformation. Despite turbulence, such as the threat of trader insolvencies and price fluctuations, there has been an increase in planning and construction activities. This is also against the backdrop of the plans to transform the gas distribution networks.

Corinna Enders, CEO, said: ‘The biomethane market in Germany is proving to be resilient and adaptable. The industry is using the crisis as an opportunity to reorganise and open up promising future markets despite considerable challenges.’

The heating market promises new opportunities in the future thanks to the German Buildings Energy Act (Gebäudeenergiegesetz, GEG), with an estimated demand of 13 to 45 TWh for decentralised heating systems alone. This makes biomethane an option in sustainable local and district heating concepts. Demand is expected to rise in the fuel market, particularly for bio-LNG, while attempts are being made to stabilise the greenhouse gas quota price, which has fallen sharply due to questionable upstream emissions reduction (UER) projects and imports of biodiesel from China. The electricity market is expected to be revitalised by the solar package and the announced biomass package after suffering significant losses in the wake of the impending insolvency of bmp greengas GmbH. At the same time, international trade is also gaining in importance outside Germany, although there are still uncertainties regarding crediting and subsidies.

About the ‘biogaspartner’ project and the Biomethane Industry Barometer

dena’s biogas partnership brings together market players from the entire biogas feed-in value chain and supports their activities in shaping the market. dena acts as the moderator and provides a platform for the coordinated exchange of knowledge and experience as well as for the national and international procurement and processing of information. In this manner, the ‘biogaspartner’ project is contributing to the accelerated defossilisation of all energy consumption sectors and in turn to achieving the German government’s energy and climate policy goals.

dena has been conducting the survey for the Biomethane Industry Barometer since 2012. The results are published annually and provide data surveys, assessments, opinions and forecasts from industry players on developments, opportunities and challenges in the biomethane market. The compilation is based on a questionnaire and individual interviews as well as the inclusion of data from the German Biogas Register and relevant third-party publications. www.biogaspartner.de
