Roadmap for the building and construction sector in Chinaina

dena is working with regional stakeholders on a roadmap for decarbonising the building and construction sector in China’s Greater Bay Area region. It will be created within the framework laid out by the Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction.

The challenge

Urban life is increasingly exposed to rising temperatures, extreme weather events and rising sea levels. At the same time, cities, especially buildings, contribute significantly to global greenhouse gas emissions. To tackle climate change, it is crucial that the building and construction sector be decarbonised and the resilience of cities strengthened. The Greater Bay Area is a cluster of cities initiated by the government and located in a coastal region in southern China. Increasing the sustainability of buildings in this megaregion could make a significant contribution to China’s carbon neutrality target for 2060.

Our solution

dena will develop a regional roadmap with recommendations for eight key areas of action. This roadmap builds on the structural framework of the GlobalABC, which aims to promote a common language and vision for the global decarbonisation of buildings. To ensure its feasibility, the project is supported by a multi-stakeholder group including the China Academy of Building Research (CABR), the ICLEI East Asia Secretariat and other GlobalABC members.

The result

The main aim of the roadmap is to support authorities and companies from the Greater Bay Area in making sustainable, resource-saving and climate-friendly decisions for the building and construction sector. The Greater Bay Area can act as a showpiece. The expertise built up and the processes initiated as part of the roadmap could have a multiplier effect within the country. In this manner, the Greater Bay Area can pave the way for other Chinese regions to pursue low-carbon building and construction development and drive national efforts towards China’s net-zero target.
