It is clear that uncertainties currently prevail, although stabilising factors could lead to a medium-term strengthening of the market

Biomethane market under pressure
The German biomethane market is in a tense situation. Falling demand for biomethane and the collapse in the EEG business are putting pressure on the market. In contrast, important steps have been taken to stabilise the market in terms of GHG quotas. The same applies to connection requests for plants that are already planned. While the potential of the heating market has yet to be tapped, supply and demand are increasing significantly in other European countries.
Challenges and uncertainties continue to shape the biomethane market:

  • political uncertainty,
  • lack of incentives,
  • market distortions resulting from insolvencies,
  • low prices, and
  • cases of fraud.

As a result, the assessment of the current business situation has fallen to its lowest level since the beginning of the survey. Without effective support mechanisms and sufficient investment security, the high potential of biomethane in Germany remains largely untapped. However, some companies are deliberately using the crisis to strengthen their market position – for example, by acquiring plants, increasing efficiency, and diversifying their sales markets, such as in the heating and maritime sectors.
