Planning of an organic waste fermentation plant in Maisach for biomethane production
A new fermentation plant is to be built in Maisach, which will process organic waste from the districts of Fürstenfeldbruck, Dachau and Starnberg and produce biomethane for feeding into the existing gas grid. This would reduce CO₂ emissions through shorter transport routes and establish a regional energy cycle. Local residents would benefit from a climate-neutral heat supply, the elimination of the CO₂ levy and without having to convert existing gas heating systems. A decision by the districts involved to implement the project is expected by the end of 2025; operation could start four years after project approval.

biogeen expands its production capacities by taking over two biomethane plants
The energy company biogeen has acquired two modern biomethane plants in Bavaria - the BGA Mammendorf and the BGA Lauterhofen - thereby expanding its portfolio by an annual production capacity of around 80 GWh. The plants were sold by Steinbeis Holding and the Abel Group. With this expansion, biogeen is strengthening its presence in southern Germany and making an important contribution to decentralised, CO₂-neutral energy supply. The move is seen as a strategic milestone in the company's goals to promote the energy transition.

UBA: Share of biomethane in the transport sector continues to grow steadily
According to the Federal Environment Agency (UBA), the share of biomethane in renewable final energy consumption in the transport sector in Germany was 7% in 2024 - a continuously growing figure since the relevant market entry in 2011. Overall, however, the share of renewable energies in the transport sector remains low at 7.2%, with biodiesel (49%) and renewable electricity (22%) making up the main shares. The use of bio-CNG and bio-LNG is included in these statistics under the collective term biomethane. While the use of biofuels is stagnating, the increasing share of renewable electricity is the main driver of the trend in recent years.

Plans for a heat supply with biomethane in Weißenburg on the brink of failure
In the municipality of Weißenburg, the historic old town is to be heated in a climate-friendly way from 2028 - regional biomethane is considered the only practicable solution due to monument protection and narrow alleyways. A feasibility study confirms the technical feasibility and shows that four nearby biogas plants could cover the annual heat requirement of 22.5 GWh - cheaper than a new heating network. However, regulatory hurdles such as the expiry of the Gas Grid Access Ordinance at the end of 2025 jeopardize the project, as farmers would no longer receive preferential grid access. Without political adjustments, the economically viable project will remain blocked for the time being.
