Regulatory Overview

The legal framework for biogas feed-in in Germany is regulated in various laws and regulations. Unlike for electricity from renewable energies, there is no legal entitlement to funding per kWh for feeding biomethane into the gas network. Instead, biomethane producers must market the biomethane themselves. Politicians have developed a mix of instruments to promote biomethane and create corresponding demand markets. In addition to pure heat applications, areas of application include combined heat and power (CHP) and use as fuel in gas vehicles. The legal framework for biogas feed-in is determined by a large number of regulations due to the many value creation stages and required processes.
