Görlitz-Zgorzelec lights up Europe: Project presentation at the EU Week of Regions and Cities

How can stakeholders on both sides of the border work together to decarbonise district heating? On 10 October, the cross-border project 'Climate Neutral District Heating for Görlitz-Zgorzelec' will be presented at a workshop in Brussels as part of the European Week of Regions and Cities.

Specific financing instruments are required to address the unique challenges of implementing the energy and heat transition at a local level, such as cross-border cooperation and citizen participation. This workshop will present these instruments and practical examples to raise awareness of these solutions among participants.

Sacha Caron, Head of Sales at Stadtwerke Görlitz AG, will present the lighthouse project 'Climate-neutral district heating for Görlitz-Zgorzelec' on behalf of the German project consortium, which includes the Polish heating supplier SEC Zgorzelec. The project's goal is to provide climate-neutral district heating on both sides of the Lusatian Neisse by 2030. To date, the project is one of five cross-border projects in Europe to have been awarded CB-RES (Cross-Border Renewable Energy Sources) status. Since the beginning of 2023, the project partners have been supported by the German-Polish Energy Platform. We support the project organiser in particular with funding searches, public relations work, political contact management, and communication.

The event is organised by the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA, a subordinate agency of the EU Commission) on behalf of the EU Commission. Other speakers are Vera Kissler, representative of the EU Commission in the Directorate-General for Energy, and Cilou Bertin, manager of the Academy at Energie Samen, which offers solutions and support for energy communities and citizen energy projects in the Netherlands.
