EU Commission supports climate neutral district heating in Görlitz/Zgorzelec
The European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) has given the green light for the financing of the cross-border project UNITED HEAT in the Euro City Görlitz/Zgorzelec. The EU funding will cover planning costs for the overall project and the construction of initial facilities such as a biomass heating plant in Zgorzelec, part of the connecting pipeline between the Görlitz Königshufen cogeneration plant and the Görlitz wastewater treatment plant, as well as the integration and expansion of sewage gas storage facilities. The successful implementation of the overall project is subject to the approval of the application for the federal subsidy for efficient heat networks (BEW) by the Federal Office of Economic Affairs and Export Control (BAFA). Further investments and applications are planned for the coming months and years.
Further information on the project, including the official press release, can be found here.
Since the beginning of 2023, the German-Polish Energy Platform has supported Stadtwerke Görlitz and the Polish heating company SEC Zgorzelec in their efforts to decarbonise the joint district heating supply. We look forward to further cooperation in this pioneering, cross-border lighthouse project, and will continue to actively support the next steps towards achieving a sustainable, future-proof heat supply in the Euro City of Görlitz/Zgorzelec, thereby helping to achieve the climate targets.
