Co-digestion of different substrates

Verification management

We would like to inform you about the latest developments regarding the co-digestion of different substrates in a biogas plant, which is related to the possibility of dividing biomethane into feedstock-related partial quantities in accordance with Section 44b (5) EEG.

On 22nd february 2024, the BLE announced that the calculation methodology prescribed by RED II for the co-digestion of several substrates in a biogas plant in the form of a total value in Nabisy will continue to allow a subsequent breakdown of the substrate-specific actual GHG emissions and the issuing of Nabisy certificates for each individual raw material.

Nevertheless, biogas plants that are certified according to SURE and REDcert must calculate an averaged value for the GHG calculation in accordance with the method described in Annex VI Part B of the Renewable Energy Directive (EU) 2018/2001 (RED II).

However, operators of biogas plants within the scope of the German BioKraft-NachV, the BioStrom-NachV or the EHV 2030 can also carry out a complete substrate-specific GHG calculation in parallel to this mandatory methodology. This means that it is still possible to split the balance sheet within the framework of the EEG and can be carried out as usual in the Biogasregister.

Both calculation methods must be checked and confirmed independently as part of the certification process. This requirement must generally be applied when the Implementing Regulation (EU) 2022/996 comes into force, i.e. on 1st january 2024.

According to RedCert, due to the different legal interpretations in some EU member states regarding the applicable calculation methodology, a retroactive calculation according to the co-digestion methodology can also be waived if the necessary data for this is demonstrably not available.
