We are the Deutsche Energie-Agentur – the German Energy Agency

dena is Germany’s centre of expertise for energy efficiency, renewable energy sources and intelligent energy systems. As the "Agency for the Applied Energy Transition" we contribute to the attainment of energy and climate policy objectives.

We develop solutions and put them into practice, both nationally and internationally. In order to achieve this, we bring together partners from politics and industry across all sectors - with an enthusiasm for one of the most exciting challenges of our time.

Mission & goals

We focus our efforts on the building, power and transport consumption sectors, as well as on issues relating to energy generation, storage, networking, and digitalisation. We realise pilot projects, advise politicians, manufacturers and service providers, qualify multipliers, inform consumers, build networks, encourage international exchanges and develop future scenarios.

To do so, dena primarily focuses on market instruments and innovative business models. And we view the energy system as a whole, because it is becoming increasingly vital to link the many different parts of the world of energy to each other. dena’s shareholders are the Federal Republic of Germany and the KfW Group.

Andreas Kuhlmann

Andreas Kuhlmann has been dena's Chief Executive since July 2015. The graduate physicist previously held positions at the Bundesverband der Energie- und Wasserwirtschaft, BDEW (German Association of Energy and Water Industries), the German Embassy in Stockholm, the European Parliament, the German Bundestag, and the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs.

Kristina Haverkamp

Kristina Haverkamp has been a Managing Director at dena since October 2015. Following various positions in the German Foreign Office, the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and the Federal Ministry of Finance, the lawyer was, among other posts, in charge of the Department of Economics in the permanent representation of the Federal Republic of Germany to the EU.

Power to Gas Potentiality Atlas

Power to gas – i.e. the conversion of electricity into gas for further use or long-term storage — is one of the most promising technologies for the future.

dena Renewable Energy Solutions Programme

dena's RES Programme gives companies the opportunity to install renewable energy technology in prestigious institutions operating in high-value target markets, therefore enabling significant visibility.

Overview

  • Over 90 projects realised in more than 60 countries.
  • Applications in the first quarter of each year, the exact period is announced publicly.
  • The company can receive up to 65.000€ for public relations and information dissemination.
  • The RES programme is open to all technologies (photovoltaics, solar thermal energy, solar cooling, bioenergy, geothermal energy, wind or water power and hybrid systems).
  • The combination of renewable energy technology with storage solutions or energy efficiency measures and applications of fuel cell technology are welcome.

Smart Meter Study

With the support of German distribution grid operators, dena has conducted a study to calculate the economic costs of a nationwide rollout of the Smart Meter technology, its direct benefit effects (grid benefits) and the regulatory framework requirements.

Start Up Energy Transition

In Start Up Energy Transition, dena is establishing a global platform for innovation in the energy transition.

Status and perspectives for renewable energy development in the UNECE region

The dena study ‘Status and perspectives for renewable energy development in the UNECE region’ provides an analysis of the renewable energy markets in the UNECE region with practical recommendations for the implementation of policies for the successful promotion of renewable energy sources.

Ancillary services 2030

Ancillary services are required for a secure and stable power supply. The study analyses and evaluates technological alternatives for the provision of ancillary services in an energy system utilising a high percentage of renewable energy.

System Transformation in Ukraine

dena is pursuing the objective of charting a path for the integration of renewable energy sources within Ukraine’s electricity system. This involves utilising the experiences and insight from the energy transition in Germany to the Ukrainian partner as a means of accelerating transformation of the Ukrainian energy system.

Thermal Energy Resource Modeling and Optimization System THERMOS

THERMOS is providing new methods and instruments with which to make the supply of heat quicker, more efficient and more economical.

Ukraine: Municipal heating transition

Ukrainian cities are about to embark on a municipal heating transition, which can be made more sustainable and efficient with the help of support from and dialogue with German experts and companies. New business models and concepts are designed to help improve the municipal heating transition, and promote sustainable development and a switch to renewable energy sources in Ukrainian cities.

WISE Power

The EU project WISE Power aims to determine successful strategies for increasing the acceptance of on-shore wind energy as well as its use in Europe. From a technical standpoint, the development of innovative participation models for project management needs to be prioritised.
