Roll-out and system integration of large-scale heat pumps

By 2045, a large share of heating network demand in Germany is expected to be supplied by electrified large-scale heat pumps. Beyond decarbonisation, electrification offers a key opportunity to strengthen the resilience of the energy system: it can reduce dependence on fossil fuel imports and increase local value creation in energy production. At the same time, the flexible electricity demand of electrified heat generation can further enhance system flexibility. Thereby it contributes to the stability of the energy system overall.

Unlike in Denmark, however, the share of large-scale heat pumps in German district heating networks is still negligible. As part of a current German-Danish project, the dena and its partners are examining the challenges related to the market ramp-up and system integration of large-scale heat pumps.  In this panel discussion, key findings will be presented and corresponding policy recommendations discussed — join us!
