Vietnam: university collaboration for energy-efficient buildings

University course, fact-finding mission, workshop

Goal: to anchor the topic of energy efficiency in buildings in the curricula of universities in Vietnam

Topics: Energy efficiency, Buildings, International partnership, Transforming the economy and society

Runtime: 2024–2025

Our mission

Vietnam’s economy is one of the most dynamic in Southeast Asia. Economic growth is accelerating urbanisation in the country. However, energy-efficient and sustainable construction in Vietnam is only realised to a limited extent. As a result, the Vietnamese construction sector with its future labour force plays an important role in reducing emissions.

The project aims to support Vietnamese universities in anchoring building energy efficiency and sustainable construction practices in their curricula in the long term. In this manner, they can make a contribution to the energy transition.

Our approach

dena is organising an interdisciplinary and scalable intensive course on the topic of energy efficiency in buildings in collaboration with the Hanoi University of Civil Engineering (HUCE). The focus is on the energy requirements of buildings. More specifically, it is about the overall life cycle based on climatic conditions and local construction methods. Students can visit examples of best practice in the construction industry as part of an educational trip.

A wrap-up workshop brings together decision-makers from politics, business, science and civil society. They will discuss the results, the scaling potential of the project and the long-term anchoring of the topic in the region (and beyond).

Planned milestones are the following:

  • Intensive course: an interdisciplinary and scalable intensive course will be conducted in collaboration with the Hanoi University of Civil Engineering.
  • Educational trip: an educational trip will be organised in close collaboration with the partner university.
  • Workshop: a wrap-up workshop will be held together with the relevant stakeholders from politics, business and the scientific community. It is intended to emphasise the importance of the topic of energy efficiency in buildings and to address the long-term anchoring of the topic in the curricula in Vietnam.
