China and Germany boost collaboration on sustainable city development

dena and Chinese partners planning innovation centre in China – three more cities opt for dena's energy and climate protection management

The Deutsche Energie-Agentur – the German Energy Agency – is intensifying its cooperation with Chinese partners in the field of sustainable city development in China. The move was agreed by both sides on Thursday at the ‘12th Conference on Urban Development and Planning’ in the Chinese city of Haikou.

Plans include, for example, the foundation of a Sino-German ‘Eco-City Technology Innovation Center’ in China by dena and the China Eco-City Academy (CECA). Andreas Kuhlmann, Chief Executive of dena, has already discussed possible locations with the Deputy Mayor of the provincial capital Chengdu, XIE Ruiwu. The aim of the innovation centre is to develop knowledge and technology exchange between the two countries.

In addition, the three cities of Nanjing, Chuzhou and Xiangyang, along with dena and the Chinese Society for Urban Studies (CSUS), have agreed to introduce the energy and climate protection management system developed by dena into municipal administration, in order to systematically and sustainably reduce energy consumption.

‘In the spring we awarded prizes to the first six Chinese eco-cities for their commitment to energy efficiency and climate protection. They’re now well on their way to becoming models of best practice for China. The fact that other cities are following this example is the strongest proof of the fruitful relationship between Germany and China,’ said Kuhlmann. ‘Constructing a China-based innovation centre will advance this work still further forward.’

In collaboration with the CSUS, dena organised a module for the conference on the topic of Sino-Chinese eco-cities. dena is implementing the ‘Eco-Cities in China’ project jointly with the CSUS, the think tank of the Chinese Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development (MoHURD). To date, a total 12 cities have been chosen as Sino-German eco-cities. As well as reducing CO2 emissions, these eco-cities are designed to build structures and experience for sustained urban management, while further developing markets for energy-efficient products and services.
