One day before the Ukrainian-German economic conference "Business Partner Ukraine" in Berlin which will be attended by German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Ukraine's Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk, the Deutsche Energie-Agentur (dena) - the German Energy Agency - has called for closer cooperation in the field of energy efficiency between the two countries.
"Energy efficiency is one of the central subjects shaping Ukraine's future that contributes significantly to the country's economic and political stabilisation," said Andreas Kuhlmann, Chief Executive of dena, who will take on the role of conference presenter. "This will reduce Ukraine's dependence on Russian energy imports, save foreign exchange, modernise the country's economy and create jobs. dena is therefore delighted that this conference is taking place and that the subject of energy efficiency is on the agenda."
dena's activities in Ukraine
dena intends to draw on its expertise and commitment to strengthen the two countries' ties in the field of energy, modernise the energy sector in Ukraine and develop joint projects between German and Ukrainian companies. dena is a member of the Ukrainian Energy Efficiency Campaign which has been set up with the aim of raising energy efficiency in buildings and the district heating sector. Aside from dena, the Committee on Eastern European Economic Relations, the Initiative Wohnungswirtschaft Osteuropa (IWO) e. V., the Kompetenzzentrum Großsiedlungen e. V., the consulting company Berlin Economics and the Delegation of the German Economy in Ukraine are also taking part.
Andreas Kuhlmann: "With buildings accounting for around 40 percent of total energy consumption in Ukraine, the country must address above all this issue, especially in a climate of rising gas prices. Thanks to its expertise in this area, Germany is the right partner for Ukraine."
With the financial support of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, dena will also join forces with IWO and the Kompetenzzentrum Großsiedlungen e. V. to launch a project on the structural advancement of energy efficient construction in Ukraine. The project will prepare a roadmap for the gradual dismantling of refurbishment obstacles and initiate a long-term government programme. The aim is to advance the refurbishment of the building stock and district heating supply across the whole country and create an efficient market for new buildings.
"The development of this roadmap is an essential step that will provide a political framework for the numerous individual projects that are currently being implemented all over Ukraine. This can only be successful in the long run if the right political framework conditions are put in place. We hope that we can make an important contribution in this area," said Mr. Kuhlmann.
