How can we improve energy efficiency? How should we build the energy systems of the future? How do we bring together people who will make the difference?
And how can we strengthen international cooperation? Our projects design energy for tomorrow’s world.
The energy transition calls for innovation and a fresh mindset. Our current level of energy consumption must be halved as quickly as possible. And it is imperative to satisfy this demand using regenerative energy sources that protect our climate and environment. The energy transition will be more successful if we use electricity, heat and fuel efficiently.
Tomorrow’s energy systems will have to overcome many and varied challenges. Production, distribution and consumption need to be linked intelligently in order to guarantee a constant supply of renewable energy.
The expansion of renewable energy has already made significant progress in Germany, especially in the electricity sector. Now the focus now is increasingly on linking the energy systems. Knowledge and technology transfer on an international level is important here.
In its “Grid Flex Study", dena is investigating how storage facilities can be used to increase flexibility in the electricity grid. The aim is to identify operating models for storage facilities that are economically viable and which reduce the load on the electricity grid.

With the help of Grid Studies I and II, dena presents the measures which will allow the German electricity grid to meet the challenges of the future: through targeted grid expansion and at the same time optimising the existing energy infrastructure.

In the future, renewable energy, storage facilities and other alternative providers of ancillary services can and must make a greater contribution towards the security and stability of our electricity system. With the aim of creating the necessary framework conditions in a swift and timely manner, the dena Ancillary Services Platform pools the results of individual activities in the field of future ancillary services, identifies areas in which action is required and promotes exchange between and communication with experts.

Partners of the platform: 22 companies from various industries (system operators, energy suppliers, system manufacturers) as well as politicians and associations
Ancillary services are required for a secure and stable power supply. The study analyses and evaluates technological alternatives for the provision of ancillary services in an energy system utilising a high percentage of renewable energy.

The EU project WISE Power aims to determine successful strategies for increasing the acceptance of on-shore wind energy as well as its use in Europe. From a technical standpoint, the development of innovative participation models for project management needs to be prioritised.
