Module: Industry

Which technologies are required to reduce emissions in energy-intensive industry sectors, such as the production of aluminium and steel? What is the role of demand-side management?

The goal of the Study Module Industry is to point out possible transformation paths in the conflict between achieving climate protection targets on the one hand while also preserving the international competitiveness of the German economy on the other. For this purpose, the module investigates central key technologies which will pave the way towards making it possible to reconcile economic growth with the reduction of emissions. Key questions of the module include:

  • Which technologies are required to reduce emissions in energy-intensive industry sectors, such as the production of aluminium and steel?
  • What role can demand-side management — i.e. the increased flexibility of production processes — play in achieving the climate protection targets?

At the same time, suggestions for frameworks are developed in the module Industry which promotes increasing efficiency and hence reducing energy consumption and emissions in an integrated energy system. It analyses the influence of the international emissions trade and develop models to ensure sufficient planning security for industry. Furthermore, new approaches, technologies and infrastructures are also examined, such as heating, process steam, or gas networks for supplying hydrogen.

Furthermore, aspects such as tapping into potential for CO2 reduction during the recovery of materials are included in the Study.
