We are the Deutsche Energie-Agentur – the German Energy Agency

dena is Germany’s centre of expertise for energy efficiency, renewable energy sources and intelligent energy systems. As the "Agency for the Applied Energy Transition" we contribute to the attainment of energy and climate policy objectives.

We develop solutions and put them into practice, both nationally and internationally. In order to achieve this, we bring together partners from politics and industry across all sectors - with an enthusiasm for one of the most exciting challenges of our time.

Mission & goals

We focus our efforts on the building, power and transport consumption sectors, as well as on issues relating to energy generation, storage, networking, and digitalisation. We realise pilot projects, advise politicians, manufacturers and service providers, qualify multipliers, inform consumers, build networks, encourage international exchanges and develop future scenarios.

To do so, dena primarily focuses on market instruments and innovative business models. And we view the energy system as a whole, because it is becoming increasingly vital to link the many different parts of the world of energy to each other. dena’s shareholders are the Federal Republic of Germany and the KfW Group.

Andreas Kuhlmann

Andreas Kuhlmann has been dena's Chief Executive since July 2015. The graduate physicist previously held positions at the Bundesverband der Energie- und Wasserwirtschaft, BDEW (German Association of Energy and Water Industries), the German Embassy in Stockholm, the European Parliament, the German Bundestag, and the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs.

Kristina Haverkamp

Kristina Haverkamp has been a Managing Director at dena since October 2015. Following various positions in the German Foreign Office, the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and the Federal Ministry of Finance, the lawyer was, among other posts, in charge of the Department of Economics in the permanent representation of the Federal Republic of Germany to the EU.

Efficient Energy Systems

The “Efficient Energy Systems” project provides information and a platform for dialogue on the energy transition for decision-makers, industry experts and the public alike.

Overview

Energy-Efficient Municipalities in Russia

dena has developed an energy and climate protection management system (ECM) with which municipalities can systematically and sustainably reduce their energy consumption. Following successful application in German and Chinese cities dena’s ECM will be implemented in Russian municipalities, taking into account specific local circumstances.

  • Adaptation of dena’s ECM instruments to the specific characteristics of Russian municipalities

Energy-Efficient Building in China

dena has been developing and implementing energy-efficient construction projects in China since 2006. Advanced technology and experience gathered in Germany are adapted and transferred to the conditions in the respective region, using experts on the ground. The aim is to improve the market conditions for energy efficiency technologies, impart knowledge and establish concepts suitable for mass marketing of energy efficiency in China.

  • First efficient house standard introduced in Hebei in 2015
  • Partners: Construction ministries of both countries, the Center of Science and Technology of Construction (CSTC), the  Chinese Society for Urban Studies (CSUS), and various provinces, specialist associations, and German and Chinese companies.

Advising BMWi on energy policies

Since 2016, dena has advised the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy on matters of energy policies in its position as framework agreement partner. It provides the consultancy services as the principal contractor, cooperating in this capacity with 14 partners from business and science.

EnerKI – Using artificial intelligence to optimise the energy system

The aim of the “EnerKI – Using artificial intelligence to optimise the energy system” project is to develop specific knowledge about the use of artificial intelligence in the energy system and make it available to businesses, experts and politicians.

EU HEROES

EU Heroes is a European partnership project that identifies obstacles to the development of municipal solar PV projects and develops solutions.

FEBS – the specialist portal for energy-efficient construction and refurbishment

The FEBS specialist portal for energy-efficient construction and refurbishment offers a wide range of services for professionals in energy consulting, architecture, engineering and skilled trades who are active in the field of energy-efficient construction and refurbishment. At the request of the German Federal Office for Economic Affairs and Export Control (BAFA), dena is offering experts a complete package comprising web platform, publications and dialogue that aims to boost the quality of energy-efficient construction and refurbishment.

Energy Efficiency Networks

In the context of the Campaign, the German Federal Government has agreed with 22 associations and organisations to establish around 500 new energy efficiency networks by end of 2020.

Combined Heat and Power Generation

The combined generation of heat and power (CHP) makes a significant contribution to increasing energy efficiency where generation is concerned. Furthermore, CHP can be used to reduce costs both in the industrial sector as well as in households.
