In a panel discussion, talks and workshops participants could inform themselves on innovative technologies, cross-border trading as well as legal framework conditions for biomethane in Europe. This year the latest EU policy developments (Draft RED II) were the special focus of the conference.
In panels on markets, trends and innovations participants refreshed their knowledge on the European Biomethane trends in Europe.
Two workshops and a World Café provided opportunities to discuss and share knowledge on harmonization and verification of cross border trade, post subsidy solutions and green mobility.
The key results of these were:
Harmonization and verification of cross border trade
• Already, many initiatives and ideas on harmonization exist
• International cooperation of biogas registries is crucial
• Regulations (mass balancing/state aid) may be clear, but practice remains complicated
Post Subsidy Solutions
• Waste streams are most relevant for the future – waste to fuel
• Biomethane has to compete with natural gas in a free market, however competition with current gas prices is challenging
• A realistic CO2 price in the ETS scheme could lead to a post subsidy solution for biomethane
Green mobility
• There are many solutions for green mobility and biomethane is one of them
• Change public perception on what green mobility is
• Explain environmental advantages of biomethane

In the margins of the conference the biogas registries from Denmark and Germany proposed their cooperation for a mutual recognition of guarantees of origins to facilitate the trade of biomethane between both countries.
