Biogas potential in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

Biogas potential in pig production.

February 2010

Study

South and south-west Brazil are characterised by intensive livestock farming. Rio Grande do Sul, the southernmost Federal state in Brazil, has a particularly high level of pig production. The manure produced in large quantities by pig farming can be used for biogas production.

This English-language study investigates the potential for biogas from pig production in Rio Grande do Sul. It describes the current treatment of pig manure, outlines the potential for biogas on the basis of the size and regional distribution of pig producers and indicates various potential uses. The intended audience for the study is both Brazilian companies and local authorities and German biogas technology exporters.

The study is part of the "Biogas Master Plan for Rio Grande do Sul" project, which is funded as part of the International Climate Protection Initiative of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety.
