dena has developed a biogas partnership in collaboration with several partners, the aim of which is to build up the world’s foremost platform for the injection of biogas into the natural gas network and the utilisation of biomethane.
The project will bring together market players from the complete biogas upgrade value chain and support them in their activities to shape the market actively.
dena’s role in the project is to act as a neutral facilitator and to provide a platform both for the acquisition and preparation of information and for its distribution both at home and abroad. The project’s market-oriented approach will supplement the efforts of the German government to establish the injection of biogas into the natural gas network as a fixed component of the future energy mix.
The parameters for the injection of biogas will be defined as a result of implementation of the government’s integrated energy and climate programme, whereby the target is to exploit a potential of 6 percent (60bn kWh) of today's natural gas consumption by the year 2020 or 10 percent (100bn kWh) by 2030. Biogas can be used not only for standard heating applications, but also for cogeneration, where the resulting energy is subsequently fed into the grid to profit from the feed-in tariffs under the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG), and in natural gas powered vehicles. A number of interesting business models can be developed to exploit the wide-ranging possibilities for its use. The market players involved have recognized this trend and are positioning themselves strategically in this new business segment.
The injection of biogas into a network offers added value at many levels: biomass provision, generation, processing, marketing, transportation, distribution and application in the electricity, heat and transport sectors. Optimization potential of a both technical and economic nature exists at each of these stages in the value chain.
Industry expertise is required to exploit this potential. Dynamic cooperation between the players will allow not only the state subsidy mechanisms to function better, but also boost investment and innovation. dena is therefore offering membership in the biogas partnership as a means of supporting this process.
The fields of action of dena’s biogas partnership.
Transparency:
There is currently very little information available on the subject of biogas upgrade and injection. The transparency field addresses this fact with objectively prepared, valid information on economic, legal, technical and ecological questions related to the injection of biogas, making a significant contribution to objective discussion.
Acceptance:
The use of biogas is being discussed with increasing controversy. Subjects such as competition for use of the crops and the impact of energy crop cultivation on nature and the environment are omnipresent. Public perception very seldom differentiates between the various biogas applications. A flexible and efficient use of the energy source biogas for corresponding end uses in the heating, electricity and transport sectors will be made possible if biogas is fed into the natural gas network. The aim of the acceptance field is to communicate the desirability of this systems integration to external stakeholders.
Cooperation:
The ambitious targets set for the use of renewable energies require speedy action. The various participants throughout the value chain must work together in partnership if the injection of biogas is to be developed efficiently. The cooperation field supports this by providing objectively prepared, tried and tested business models and cooperation approaches. The aim is to boost the efficiency potential available in the market throughout the value chain and thus to minimize the economic cost.
