Short information
A local authority that uses less energy will save money and do its bit to tackle climate change at the same time. dena has therefore launched a project to encourage the German local authorities to introduce systematic energy and climate change management. The project offers selected authorities assistance and support in their journey to better energy efficiency.

Energy-Efficient Municipalities.
Saving energy with energy and climate change management.
70 percent of all CO2 emissions of public authorities are caused in towns and smaller communities, and Germany's municipalities spend around EUR 2.3 billion each year on electricity and heating of their properties. Measures improving energy efficiency thus offer considerable savings potential, even if funding and staffing capacities are limited.
The key to more energy efficiency is the introduction of municipal energy and climate change management systems with a focus not on individual refurbishment but on the systematic analysis of municipal energy consumption, the application of innovative financing models and the implementation and subsequent supervision of energy efficiency projects. This applies not only to buildings, but to all areas in which the local authorities are active, from street lighting and the promotion of public transport to the purchase of efficient devices. Many local authorities are already active in these fields, but a holistic approach is often still lacking.
The aim of the project is to:
- show local authorities in Germany a structured way of improving their energy efficiency by using energy and climate change management,
- test the introduction of energy and climate change management in selected model municipalities,
- develop the mechanisms and measures to improve energy efficiency in all municipal fields of activity, from buildings and transport to electricity and energy supply systems and
- trigger emulation in the local authorities through public relations work throughout Germany.
Under the scope of this project dena is offering local authorities free initial telephone advice on the subject of energy efficiency.
