dena Grid Study

February 2005

The final version of the Grid Study “Integration into the national grid of onshore and offshore wind energy generated in Germany by the year 2020” (dena Grid Study) commissioned by dena was presented to the general public in February 2005. The project documentation listed below is in German unless otherwise stated.

Integration into the national grid of onshore and offshore wind energy generated in Germany by the year 2020

Cover

The 500-page Grid Study presents a much-needed concept for the integration into the power grid of electricity, particularly that generated by wind farms.

This makes fundamental, long-term energy planning with balanced solutions and the support of all parties involved possible. Coordinated planning also helps to stabilize the supply of electricity in the long term as an important factor for business development and corporate investment decisions.

The study develops strategies for the increased use of renewable energies and their effects on the grid until 2015. It focuses on the integration into the electricity grid of the approximately 37,000 MW of wind capacity expected to be generated onshore and offshore by this period this has the highest potential of increasing the contribution of renewable energies to power generation in the medium term.

The results of the study show, that the government's intention of increasing the contribution of renewable sources to power generation to at least 20% in Germany between 2015 and 2020 can be achieved. This will only be possible, however, if the measures to develop the electricity grid discussed in the report are implemented. The main concerns addressed are:

dena Grid Study II – Integration of Renewable Energy Sources in the German Power Supply System from 2015-2020 with an Outlook to 2025 Page

dena Grid Study II provides a strategic plan for the further development of Germany's power grid for connecting and integrating renewable energy sources in conjunction with maximally cost-efficient use of conventional power stations and higher levels of European power trading.
